Has and Have in Malayalam: Undu, Illa, Undo and Ille

Learn how to express possession in Malayalam using undu, illa, undo and ille, with practical examples and questions.

9 min readBeginner friendlyBy Jintesh John

Malayalam commonly expresses has and have with ഉണ്ട് (undu), literally showing that something exists with or for someone. The negative is ഇല്ല (illa), and the question form is ഉണ്ടോ (undo?).

This pattern works for possessions, family, feelings, facilities and availability, making it one of the most useful structures for beginners.

What you need to know

1

Positive

Use the person in the dative form plus the object and undu: എനിക്ക് ഒരു കാർ ഉണ്ട് means I have a car.

2

Negative

Replace undu with illa: എനിക്ക് കാർ ഇല്ല means I do not have a car.

3

Questions

Use undo for Do you have…? and ille for Don't you have…?

Useful Malayalam examples

Read each sentence aloud. Use the pronunciation as a bridge, then return to the Malayalam script as you become familiar with it.
