English uses can for ability, possibility and permission, but Malayalam chooses different expressions according to meaning and situation. The most common are കഴിയും (kazhiyum), പറ്റും (pattum) and സാധിക്കും (saadhikkum).
Pattum is extremely common in everyday conversation. Kazhiyum often emphasises ability, while saadhikkum can suggest feasibility or successful possibility.

Ability
കഴിയും (kazhiyum) means can or be able to. Its negative is കഴിയില്ല (kazhiyilla).
Everyday possibility
പറ്റും (pattum) means can, may or is possible. Use പറ്റുമോ? (pattumo?) to ask Can you?/Is it possible?
Permission
Polite permission may use forms such as -ട്ടെ? or -ക്കാമോ?: ഞാൻ ഇവിടെ ഇരിക്കട്ടെ? Can I sit here?
